Dr. Jeremy Rich, chair of the Department of Stem Cell Biology & Regenerative Medicine in Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute, was awarded the National Cancer Institute’s Outstanding Investigator Award and will receive $6.7 million over seven years for his research laboratory.

The Clinic said in a news release that the National Cancer Institute awards the select grants to “established scientists who have exceptional records of accomplishment and whose research shows great promise for future medical breakthroughs.”

In a statement, Rich said, “This is an amazing honor and opportunity. We are just now beginning to comprehend the unique biology of brain cancer stem cells, and this substantial award will push us years ahead in finding new treatments for glioblastoma.”

Rich specializes in the study of brain cancer stem cells, the self-renewing cells that are highly resistant to conventional cancer therapies. The Clinic said in its news release that brain cancer stem cells are believed to be responsible for the aggressive nature of glioblastoma, the most common and most lethal form of brain cancer.

Rich’s award — entitled “Dynamic Complexity of Brain Tumor Stem Cells” — “will focus on how brain cancer stem cells regulate their metabolism distinct from other cancer cells and stem cells in the brain,” according to the Clinic. Understanding these mechanisms “is expected to identify new methods to effectively eliminate the deadly stem cells.”
