National Brain Tumor Foundation Action Alert

The National Brain Tumor Foundation is joining with other health organizations around the country to ask for your help in making sure there is funding for health and cancer research. Your phone call can make a difference!

Background:

• The President's FY 2007 budget proposal calls for no increase for the National Institutes of Health (which was cut by .1% in FY 2006) and for a cut of $40 million for the National Cancer Institute (which was cut .7% in FY 2006).

• The Senate has adopted the Specter-Harkin Budget Amendment to the Senate Budget Resolution (S. Con. Res. 83) which would add $7 billion above the President's budget request in order to restore funding for the NIH and NCI to FY 2005 levels.

• The House Budget Committee is meeting on Wednesday morning, March 29. Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) will introduce a budget amendment in the Budget Committee that parallels the Specter-Harkin Amendment.

• The full House is expected to vote on the final budget by Friday, April 7.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

If you reside in the district of a member of the House Budget Committee (list below), please call your Representative between now and take the following steps:

-Call (202) 225-3121 and ask to be connected to your Representative.

-Ask to speak with the legislative assistant who handles health care or budget issues.

-Request that the Representative vote FOR the DeLauro budget amendment to increase funding for health and education by $7 billion.

-Urge that the Representative support every effort to increase funding for Function 550 and cancer research and programs, either in committee or on the floor

-Tell them that 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and the US must take the lead in supporting research.

-Tell them that you (or a loved one or a friend) has been impacted by the diagnosis of a brain tumor and research funding is critical.
