NCI and NHGRI Launch Comprehensive Effort to Explore Cancer Genomics

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) invite the advocacy community to participate in a teleconference on The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) Pilot Project.

Although we know more about the molecular basis of many cancers than we did several years ago, the number of cancer types, combined with the heterogeneity of the disease have prevented researchers from being able to comprehensively identify genetic mutations. A more systematic understanding of cancer genetics could help us understand the molecular pathways that trigger the growth of cancer cells and enable their spread throughout the body.

TCGA will lay the foundation for eventually developing an “atlas” of genomic changes of all major cancers. Knowing the genetic alterations will enable the development of targeted therapies, diagnostics, and preventive agents for cancer.

Please join NCI Deputy Director Dr. Anna D. Barker and NHGRI Director Francis S. Collins to discuss the project and what it means for patients and their loved ones affected by cancer. A question and answer session for participants will follow the panelists’ presentations. All you need is a phone. The call is toll-free and no registration is required.

Tuesday, December 13, 2005, at 12:30 p.m. (ET)

Toll-Free: 1-800-857-6584

Passcode: HADLEY

We hope you’ll be able to participate!
