Foundation Funds Record Amount for Brain Tumor Research

OAKLAND, Calif., July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Brain Tumor Foundation (NBTF), a national non-profit organization dedicated to helping brain tumor patients and funding medical research, awarded over $590,000 in research grants this year.

"This is the largest amount of money NBTF has ever been able to grant", says Rob Tufel, MPH, MSW, Director of Patient Services. "We're very proud that we've been able to fund so many important projects and further our goal of improving treatment and eventually finding a cure for this terrible disease."

The National Brain Tumor Foundation, founded in 1981 by brain tumor patients, family members and health professionals, began with the primary focus of facilitating medical research. "From its inception, NBTF has been committed to raising funds for medical research," explains Janis Brewer, MBA, Executive Director of NBTF. "We've always believed that the only way to prevent more tragic deaths from brain tumor disease is to support innovative research in the hopes of finding a cure."

"This year we are thrilled to be funding so many exciting projects", says Tufel. "They cover a variety of subjects, from beneficial effects of music assisted relaxation and guided imagery to gene therapy. Some researchers are looking at origins and causes of different tumor types while others are trying to prevent long term damage from different treatment modalities. We really try to fund a range of studies so that we can we can simultaneously look forward to future cures while trying to improve current treatments and quality of life for patients who are undergoing treatment."

The National Brain Tumor Foundation (NBTF), a non-profit organization in Oakland, California, raises funds for research and provides support and information to patients and family members. The NBTF patient information line (800-934-CURE) and website, http://www.braintumor.org, receive more than 1000 inquiries each month requesting information and support. September 20-21, 2002, NBTF will host the 7th National Brain Tumor Conference for brain tumor patients, family and health professional, with sites in the San Francisco Bay Area, Denver and Phoenix.
