Vukovich to have limited coaching role during radiation treatments

May 18, 2001

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Phillies third base coach John Vukovich faces radiation treatments and a limited coaching role for the next six weeks as he recovers from surgery for the partial removal of a benign brain tumor.

"While the tumor has shrunk, 30 radiation treatments are recommended over the next six weeks," Vukovich said Friday after meeting with general manager Ed Wade and manager Larry Bowa. "The first one will be next Wednesday."

Vukovich plans to miss the team's next three road trips so he can remain at home for treatment.

"I'm still having a little vision problem and don't want to coach third until I feel I can contribute," Vukovich said. "And I don't want to rush things."

Marc Bombard will coach third base on the road trips, Wade said.

"He'll also coach at home whenever Vuke is unable to, for whatever reason," Wade said. "We've received permission from Major League Baseball for Vukovich to be in uniform and on the bench when he isn't coaching third."

Wade said Vukovich will return on Tuesday, "and will coach third base when he deems he is ready."

After being bothered by vision problems for two years and by constant headaches since spring training, Vukovich, 53, had surgery May 8.

Doctors removed a portion of a tumor larger than a golf ball. The rest of the tumor could not be removed because it is lodged in brain tissue.

Dr. David Andrews, who performed the 90-minute operation, said Vukovich is cancer-free. He said the coach would undergo an MRI exam every three months for the next year to monitor the tumor.
