Salk researchers create brain cancer mouse model

05 Jan 2009

Clinical Research

Scientists have produced a mouse model of a deadly brain cancer which they claim closely replicates the development and progression of brain tumours in humans.

The model of glioblastoma was developed by researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and aids the analysis of naturally-arising tumours.

"Mouse models of human cancer have taught us a great deal about the basic principles of cancer biology," says Inder Verma, professor in the laboratory of genetics at the institution.

He adds that the models only simulate the cancer and cannot replicate the full molecular complexity of the disease in humans.

The research is reported in the online edition of the journal Nature Medicine and it may help scientists to imitate different types of tumours and discover the nature of cancer stem cells.

Last month, researchers at Salk revealed that they have created a human embryonic stem cell-based system for modelling the muscle-wasting disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
