HEALTH CARE ADVOCATE COMMEMORATES NATIONAL BRAIN TUMOR AWARENESS WEEK

04/23/05 5:30 PDT

In commemoration of National Brain Tumor Awareness Week, running from May 1 to May 7, a local health care advocate with brain cancer is rallying for research funding.

Local actor William Oliver, 41, of Petaluma, will meet with his local members of Congress to highlight the need for brain tumor research and for collaboration between research centers.

After being diagnosed with a tumor in 1995, Oliver received treatment at the University of California, San Francisco, which is internationally renowned for its brain tumor research, according to Oliver.

Four brain surgeries later, Oliver still takes medication to suppress seizures -- his brain tumor continues to grow.

Yet he has turned a life threatening diagnosis into an opportunity to advocate for people with cancer.

"When you have any kind of life threatening diagnosis you have to become an advocate for yourself," Oliver said in a statement.

Oliver has spent the past few months traveling the country to meet with experts on rare brain tumors and believes his experience dealing with insurance companies and doctors has enabled him to help other cancer patients.

"The gay lobby did this successfully with AIDS funding so that there are now drugs and social services for people with AIDS/HIV. Many women have spoken out about breast cancer and put it on the health agenda. But for brain tumors there's no cure in sight," Oliver said.
