Study finds no greater risk of brain tumors due to cell phones 02.12.2004 17:32
A recently completed Swedish study (PDF) did not find any increased risk of brain tumors from cell phones. In contrast, another study also conducted by the Institute of Environmental Medicine at Stockholm's renowned Karolinska Institute on acoustic neuroma found that people who used cell phones for many years run a greater risk of having such benign tumors on their nerves for hearing and balance.
Both studies are part of the Interphone Study being coordinated by the World Health Organization's (WHO) International Agency for Research of Cancer (IARC) concurrently in 13 countries (including Germany) where mobile communications has been used for some time. The partial studies just released are the first findings. The researchers wish to wait until all studies have been completed before making a comprehensive assessment. (Craig Morris) / (anw/c't)
