Cancer foundation gives family hope

BENICIA -- As 7-year-old Timmy lay dying in a Sacramento hospital bed, his parents made him a promise.

Tim and Lesa Fitzpatrick vowed to find out why 3,000 U.S. children are diagnosed with brain tumors each year and to help put a stop to it.

"If a child was murdered, we'd do everything we could to get the guy," Lesa Fitzpatrick said. "We don't feel this should be any different."

After nine months of fighting, Timmy lost his battle with cancer in May, but his parents' crusade against the disease had just begun.

After Timmy's death, they formed a foundation to fund genetic research into brain cancer and asked Timmy's classmates at St. Dominic's School in Benicia to help.
