Veteran players say longevity is no accident

Mark Rypien has several nicknames with the Indianapolis Colts. Some affectionately call him "Timer," short for old-timer. Others call him "Grandpa." Tight end Marcus Pollard refers to the 38-year-old backup quarterback as "Pappy."
When Rypien ended his retirement of three years and joined the Colts in training camp, the 13-year veteran became the oldest player on a young team. The Colts' 53-man roster consists of 39 players who weren't in high school when Rypien became a pro in 1986.
With age comes invaluable perspective. Rypien knows his place. He knows the league. He's experienced the high of being Super Bowl XXVI MVP and been humbled by the personal despair of losing a young son to a brain tumor.
