Brain Tumor Medical Advice Nurse Only a Phone Call Away:

Gullikson Foundation Funds Crucial Patient Support Position

OAKLAND, Calif., July 17 /PRNewswire/ -- A vital free service for brain tumor patients and their families is once again available through the National Brain Tumor Foundation (NBTF). The twenty-year-old agency's Medical Advice Nurse has again been funded by the Tim & Tom Gullikson Foundation. The nurse, Mary Lovely, RN, PhD, speaks with brain tumor patients and their family members about the complex treatment and coping issues associated with a brain tumor diagnosis.

"Talking with Mary Lovely really helped us understand the side effects of radiation. She spent lots of time with me and helped us make better treatment decisions," says a grateful family member of a brain tumor survivor. Donna Doherty, Executive Director of the Tim & Tom Gullikson Foundation states, "NBTF's Medical Advice Nurse is a great match for our mission. We want to make sure that, in addition to the medical care patients receive, they are also getting the education and emotional support that is crucial to their recovery and survival."

Receiving as much education as possible at diagnosis is the key to making good treatment choices. The information given by the Medical Advice Nurse is a helpful step early on and throughout the care of every brain tumor patient. "Receiving a brain tumor diagnosis can be a scary ordeal for the patient and their entire family. Our service helps educate callers on the complex medical world they have just been thrust into. I help them sort it all out and teach them to ask their health care providers the right questions about treatment options, side effects, surgery and coping," says NBTF's Medical Advice Nurse, Mary Lovely, RN, PhD.

The service, available since 1997, is an important component of NBTF's Patient Services Program. The free telephone advice service augments educational materials, an interactive website (www.braintumor.org), patient conferences, telephone conferences and training courses. For information on all NBTF's patient programs call +1-800-934-CURE.

The Tim & Tom Gullikson Foundation assists brain tumor patients and their families in managing the physical, emotional and social challenges presented by the illness. For more information call +1-888-GULLIKSON.
