AXA Advisors 'Miracles on Ice' at Aventura Mall To Help Build A Pediatric Brain Tumor Center in South Florida

First Comprehensive Pediatric Brain Tumor Center at Miami Children's Hospital

AVENTURA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 9, 2001-- Over the past two decades the occurrence of childhood brain tumors has increased by thirty percent, making the condition the leading cause of childhood cancer related deaths in the United States. Currently, children in Florida who suffer from brain tumors must travel outside the state to receive the best treatment. This summer, Aventura Mall with the help of AXA Advisors, WPLG - Channel 10, the Florida Panthers, Miami Ice and many other sponsors throughout South Florida will present "Miracles on Ice", one of the largest indoor ice rinks in South Florida. All proceeds of this event will go to the Miami Children's Hospital Foundation, Children's Brain Trust, a volunteer organization dedicated to raising awareness and funding to help fight brain cancer. The goal of "Miracles on Ice" is to help raise funds to build the first comprehensive brain tumor center at the Miami Children's Hospital.

"Miracles on Ice", will help fund a state-of-the-art pediatric brain tumor center that will provide childhood cancer patients with an Intraoperative MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) unit, and other research, diagnostic, and therapeutic methods needed to provide the highest quality of surgical treatment. "The Intraoperative MRI will better equip neurosurgeons to completely remove brain tumors without causing damage to surrounding tissues," commented Dr. Glenn Morrison, pediatric neurosurgeon at the Miami Children's Hospital. "This new technology is the best diagnostic tool for tumors located so close to the brain stem that locating where the tumor ends and brain begins is often a difficult task."

The Miami Children's Hospital, Children's Brain Trust was founded by Paul and Carrie Hale, who have experienced first hand the devastating effects of brain cancer. "Shortly after the death of our son Bret, we created this volunteer organization with the goal of increasing awareness of brain cancer and raising the necessary funds to help fight this terrible disease," commented Paul Hale, co-founder of the Miami Children's Hospital Foundation's Children's Brain Trust. "The children of South Florida who suffer from brain tumors should not have to travel hundreds of miles to seek treatment."

"We're thrilled to support this great cause at a high level with our Region's leading branch in South Florida," stated Carlos M. Musibay, President, AXA Advisors Florida/Caribbean Region. "The Children's Brain Trust and Miami Children's Hospital have made great strides in their dedication to creating a comprehensive pediatric brain tumor center at the Miami Children's Hospital, and we are proud to assist in this endeavor."

Joining Aventura Mall and AXA Advisors as sponsors for this premier event are WPLG - Channel 10, Coast 97.3 FM, Miami Ice Arena, The Florida Panthers, Miccosukee Indian Gaming, The Broadway Series, Turnberry Associates, Build-A-Bear Workshop(TM), Thrifty Car Rental, Miami Seaquarium, the Florida Marlins Community Foundation, the Aventura Marketing Council, Porta Vita and Turnberry Realty.
