Writer Garcia Marquez's Brother Dies

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) - Author and journalist Eligio Garcia Marquez, a younger brother of Nobel laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez, died Friday of an illness, his family said. He was 53.

Eligio Garcia Marquez, one of 12 siblings of the Colombian writer, was widely reported to have had a brain tumor.

Despite the illness, he still published an acclaimed account this year of how his brother was inspired to write his signature masterpiece, "One Hundred Years of Solitude."

He also published a 1978 novel, "Para matar el tiempo" ("To Kill Time") and a 1982 collection of writings by nine emerging Latin American writers.

At the time of his death, Eligio Garcia Marquez held the position of general coordinator of Colombia's Cambio news magazine, a respected weekly that Gabriel Garcia Marquez purchased several years ago.

He is survived by his wife and two children. Funeral arrangements were not immediately known.
