- Question: My GP will not send me for a CT scan so what do I do?
It is difficult to answer this question without knowing the medical background
of the patient. As a general rule, the test is performed to confirm the
suspicion or clinical diagnosis of a physician or other treating
professional. In addition, many insurance companies won't pay for the test
if it is not justified based upon some symptoms or signs of the disease. CT
scan is an expensive test and the patient could be liable for lots of money if
not paid by insurance company. I would suggest talking to the primary care
physician again and discussing your health concerns in detail. Sometimes a
referral to a specialist is advisable. For example, a neurologist or
orthopedic surgeon, if someone is concerned enough about his or her health
to ask for CT scan of head or spine respectively.
