(0.9814)   What are the possible side effects of radiation?

(0.9201)   HOW DOES THE RADIATION THERAPY WORKS,ON BRAINSTEM GLIOMA TUMOR, CLASIFFIED LOW GRADE?

(0.9113)   Can an MRI differentiate the growth of tumor vs edema caused by radiation? Can PET test help in answering this? My history could be helpfull: JPA in medulla, biopsy in May when the cyst was drained out, radiation was in June-July, control MRI in October said shrinkage mostly due to the disapperance of the cyst and yesterday~s one states slight progression when compared to MRI in October. Can it be that the growth is due to the cyst which is now visible again? Can it be that edema is present 6 months after the radiation and that it was not 2 months after it? Thanks a lot.

(0.9017)   I need information about survival rates for a 69-year-old female who recently had a glioblastoma removed from the optic nerve. Doctors are prescribing radiation and chemo (pill form). What is the prognosis and what are the side effects of the radiation?

(0.9017)   My father is undergoing radiation and taking temodar for GBM. I read up on Temodar andr learned that it should be taken 42 days on with radiation. My father started radiation about ten days before taking Temodar. Should he continue with the Temodar until the prescription runs out, or should he stop taking it when he stops radiation? Second question, the oncologist said that he should wait a month after radiation before taking MRIs, CT scans, etc. Is this true? Shouldn't they be taken immediately, especially with an agressive form of cancer such as GBM?

(0.9017)   My husband just had 2nd surgery because of re-growth of gbm. Six gliadel wafers implanted and now 2 weeks sterotactic radiation scheduled. How does this type of radiation differ from the 6 weeks of radiation he had after his first re-sectioning surgery?

(0.8912)   My sister has just undergone radiation treatment while on Temodar for a GBM tumor. It has been four weeks since her last radiation treatment and she has not been scheduled for an MRI by her oncologist. How long should she be waiting before a MRI is taken to know if the treatment is responding?

(0.8912)   Why is Temodar prescribed on radiation days only? What is the usual first course of treatment for a grade 4 glioblastoma? How many days of radiation and chemotherapy (Temodar)?

(0.8912)   My mother has been diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme, tumor location: brain stem. She had a stereotactic biopsy and the doctor prescribed 40 radiation treatments with daily intake of Temodal 140mg. The radiation treatment clinic doesn~t work on weekends, so she goes 5 weekdays and pauses for 2 day week-end. However, the doctor told her to take Temodal even for week-ends till the rest of radiation treatment. That means that she would end up taking Temodal for 56 days! On the information sheet for Temodal, it is stated that Temodal should be taken for 42, up to 49 days max! Could you please tell me is it safe for my mother to take Temodal longer then 49 days? Is it safe to follow our doctor~s orders in continuing with Temodal until the end of 40 week-day radiation treatment (and end up taking Temodal for 56 days)? Should she continue taking Temodal on week-ends when she doesn~t go for radiation treatment?

(0.8912)   My 68-yr-old dad had neurosurgery 6/28/05 to remove a 15 mm mass from his right temporal lobe, near the surface. He had no presenting symptoms. It was found on an MRI he received after a 2 minute bout of double vision (later linked to medication?). The pathology report concluded that the mass was a metastesis, most likely from the lung; CT scan and PET scan pending next week. Dad is doing very, very well. He is on dilantin therapeutically 200 mg/day. He is back to his daily walk (was at 3 miles/day, now at .5-1 mile). Today, (2 weeks after surgury) we went to a radiologist. He is recommending whole brain radiation every day for 2 weeks. We have heard of diminishing brain function after radiation. Is pinpoint or partial radiation a better idea? Next, after the CT and PET, is the cancer source, most-likely lung. Can/should treatment start there before/during any brain radiation.

(0.8912)   My brother has just been given a dx of GBM, parietal lobe. Surgery has been deemed not advisable at this time due to size/location of the tumor and observed speech & cognitive effects. He will begin radiation therapy in a few days in hopes of shrinking the tumor prior to a re-evaluation for resection. 2 questions: 1) Does the fact that resection cannot be undertaken prior to radiation therapy indicate a poorer overall pronosis than if rescetion was done first? 2) The Drs have not mentioned chemotherapy concurrent with the radiation therapy. Especially since resection wasn~t possible, isn~t this an option that should be pursued?

(0.8909)   My 25-year-old daughter had an ependymoma removed from her 4th ventricle, cerebellum and brainstem. The surgeon performed a gross total resection but left a microscopic layer of tumor cells on her brainstem. She now suffers from ataxia, double vision and balance difficulties. Is radiation appropriate at this time? If radiation is done now and the tumor comes back on her brainstem, is she able to have gamma knife treatment at that time? What are the possible complications from radiation to the brainstem? Who would be an expert in ependymomas to contact?

(0.8909)   My 4 year old daughter, Erin, was diagnosed on 8-11-02 with a Diffuse Pontine Glioma. She immediately was enrolled in a Clinical Trial by her Doctor, at Children~s Memorial Hospital. This trial uses Carboplatin Monthly and Thalidomide Daily as well as Radiation Therapy. She has undergone about 14 sessions of Radiation directly to her Pons Tumor. She has responded very well. We know this because another MRI was performed on her Brain on 8-27-02. Based on her complaints of occasional back pain, her Dr. ordered a Spinal MRI. This MRI showed new tumor growth (very early) in the cervical spine area. He performed a spinal tap yesterday and feels the tumor cells are PNET. It has been decided to now include the entire brain, brain stem and spine in the radiation treatment. She will begin this new radiation regimen beginning Tuesday, September 10th. Her chemotherapy regimen will also be changed to 3 chemotherapy drugs that are proven to be somewhat effective with PNET Tumors. I understand how rare this occurance is. Erin is otherwise very healthy. We were told that her diagnosis has occurred early in her disease. My question to you is do you have any knowledge of any other children with PNET Pontine Gliomas that also had secondary cervical tumors, that were diagnosed very early and received radiation and chemotherapy. If so, how were they treated and what was the outcome. I appreciate your time. Thank you, Michele F.

(0.8793)   Personality change and GBM: My best friend has GMB diagnosed in May 03, two tumor removal operations (and another one scheduled), two rounds of radiation. She has speech problems and behavior issues. I would like to know more about the behavior issues in order to better deal with them. It is not unusual for her to have a ~~temper tantrum~~ similar to that of a two-year old child over a trivial issue. My concern is that her main care-giver may become totally burnt out unless there is some relief of these symptoms. My questions are: 1) Where can we find information about the specific personality changes that can be caused by GBM, the surgery, the radiation, and the medications? 2) What can be done to relieve these behavioral problems? 3) I noticed way back in the early 1990s that my friend gradually became harder and harder to get along with. These problems are now greatly increased to the point that if I didn~t know she had a brain tumor I would think she was mentally ill. But the basic personality changes started a long time ago...her other friends and co-workers noticed this too. The personality changes started were very subtle at first and were/are in the areas of lack of social skills and social awareness, anger and temper tantrums, constant emotional/verbal manipulation of others (I think this is actually because of a ~~turning inward~~ problem...everything revolves around her rather than a real attempt to manipulate). Thanks very much. p.s. my friend lives in South America so U.S. resources are not available to her.

(0.8792)   My husband, age 52, was diagnosed with an AA in Dec., had a 90% resection in Jan., had conventional radiation and Temodar afterwards. His latest MRI shows no tumor. He is now on 400 mg of Temodar 5/23, 4 mg of decadron, Trileptal and Provigil. Since his surgery, he has remained extremely fatigued, sleepy and mentally unfocused. Since beginning the Temodar 5/23 (6 weeks after radiation), his processing abilities have worsened. He is hardly able to carry on a conversation. Is this more likely delayed radiation effect, Temodar, or tumor damage, or can we know? How likely is it that he will regain his cognitive function over time or will it worsen?

(0.8792)   My mother was diagnosed with a GBM in the left temporal lobe for which she had surgery in June this year. The tumor was debulked. It was followed by one round of temozolomide 250 mg and then six weeks of radiation with 100 mg of temozolomide. The postradiation MRI was not very clear between a live tumor and necrosis, so an MRS was performed which shows a residual tumor. Now, her radiation oncologist has suggested reverting to the neurosurgeon for further treatment options. How do we know what did not work, radiation or temozolomide? What clinical trial treatments should we ask for? The surgery resulted in left hemiparesis which is gradually improving. Is radiosurgery or gamma knife an option?

(0.8792)   My friend was diagonized in early May, 2004, with Glioblastoma Multiforme. He had surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. After radiation, they did an MRI and it showed a new growth so he started the chemotherapy and, after four chemo treatments, they did another MRI and it had gotten bigger. They now want to do another surgery and try a different chemo. Are there any significant things we should worry about with the second surgery and, since it is still growing after radiation and chemotherapy, what are his chances of survival and how long?

(0.8792)   After an episode of Jacksonian epilesy in November last year, my 69 year old father was diagnosed with a Brain tumour in his right frontal region. He was operated on in December to remove the tumour, subsequent scans have shown the operation to be a success. My father commenced two weeks radiation treatment from January 29th til February 11th 2003. He was taking Dexamethasone since surgery and was taken off this around the same time as his radiation treatment finished. He was also taking Dilantin from the time of his episode of Jacksonian epilesy and was taken off this around 6 weeks ago. He has been off all medication for the past 6 weeks. About a month after finishing radiation treatment he started feeling nauseous with occasional vomiting and a complete loss of appetite. These symptoms have continued for the past three months. He has been advised by his radiation specialists that these symptoms should not be related to the radiation treatment he had earlier this year and recent blood tests and CAT scans have failed to identify any cause for this nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite. The symptoms have now become so severe to the point where my father can not tolerate the smell of food and he has lost a substanial amount of weight. Do you think these symptoms could be related in any way to his surgery or radiation treatment. And can you give us any advise on what steps we should take next? Thanks.

(0.8792)   My brother was diagnosed 4/2004 with GBM. He has had a successful resection and received 6 weeks of IMRT radiation. On July 2, he had his first MRI with contrast since completion of radiation approximately 4 weeks ago. The doctor was very pleased with the results and said they could not be better. He did show us a very small area of enhancement on one of the mri slices. When asked, he did say they were tumor cells. My question is: can he really be so sure without a biopsy? Are they residual cells left from an incomplete surgery, new cells since surgery or possibly even scar tissue or necrotic tissue from radiation?

(0.8792)   1.I was wondering if the size of a tumor meant anything at the time of radiation? I dont have one but a friend does and Im curious who is a adult. 2. Can radiation kill any size tumor? 3.what is a good size for radiation if there is such a size? I was told large tumors may go dormat from radiation but it will find a new blood supply and become active again. 4.Do dr really know if the tumor is dormat or if its just scare tissue? I heard that they cant tell. 5.Do we know how long larger tumors can sit dormat? Thanks,Kay!!

(0.8789)   wife age 45 DX oglioastrocytoma, left frontal lobe , partial excision,42 tripps of radiation, finished with temodar,my question is why are there good days and bad days with her memory. it seems after the boost during radiation her memory went down hill she finish up two weeks ago do you think her memory will improve with time

(0.8789)   Yesterday my husband(recurring oligo/astro, grade4)had sterotactic radiation. When he had conventional radiation fatique was major until about 7 weeks past completion. Since he received all this radiation is one shot will fatique be more, less or the same? In other words what should we expect? Thank you.

(0.8658)   I had my first dose of radiation today and saw the blue light. Is it caused by radiation on the optic nerve or the vision center of the brian? Is it very common? No one told me about it beforehand.

(0.8658)   My Dad's behavior has gotten very hyper, manic and aggressive. Everything has to happen right now and it has to be done his way. He has GBM, had a successful sugery and is in his third week of radiation and Temodar. He is taking decadron and lexapro. Could this be a side effect from the medication? Do we tell him that he is being irrational and to knock it off? He says he is right and we are wrong. We are concerned that he is becoming a danger to himself and to others.

(0.8658)   I was diagnosed in 2002 with lung cancer; I received Carboplatin/Taxol, chest radiation and a wedge resection. I was recently found to have a cerebellum lesion which was surgically removed. I have conflicting recommendations and am wondering how best to make a decision. One recommendation is to wait for a scan result and go with treatment according to that. My oncologist is recommending whole brain radiation with Temodar. My recent PET scan was clear and the MRI only showed the one metastasis.
