  • Question: My daughter had a Anaplastic Astrocytoma tumor, everything removed and she had radiation. She is still on Dilantin 400 mg a day for over a year now. How long will she have to stay on this level and can this be reduced? Can the operation she had for the tumor cause other problems such as breathing issues. She has some forgetfulness to this day. Wilm this ever go away and what can she do to help improve this? She takes only 2 courses in college because her doctor does not want too much stress on her. How long before that changes?

You have asked many important questions:

Continuing on Dilantin depends on whether she has ever had a seizure or if it was given to prevent a seizure. Motor vehicle driving rules in different states about being seizure-free also affect this. Any physical side effects depend on where the tumor was and how much and what kind of radiation she received. Most neurooncologists add chemotherapy after radiation for AA. You did not mention this. We hope this gives you the questions to ask of her doctors to continue the dialogue.
